The Solar Service Technician is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, inspection, and restoration of residential and commercial solar power systems. This position works directly with customers, project partners, and the operations team to ensure solar assets are operating safely, reliably, and efficiently.
The ideal candidate has strong solar and electrical experience, excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills, takes pride in quality workmanship, and is comfortable working independently in the field.
Primary Responsibilities
Solar Maintenance & Inspections: Perform preventative maintenance, system inspections, testing, and evaluations to identify deficiencies and maintain system performance and longevity.
Troubleshooting & Repair: Diagnose and resolve solar system issues, including inverter and microinverter failures, optimizer faults, electrical faults, ground and isolation faults, communication issues, monitoring failures, damaged wiring, module-level issues, and other balance-of-system deficiencies.
System Removal & Reinstallation: Assist with or perform solar removal and reinstallation projects associated with roofing, system repairs, equipment upgrades, and other project requirements.
Testing & Recommissioning: Perform required electrical testing, system startup, commissioning, and recommissioning following repairs, equipment replacement, or reinstallation.
Customer Service: Provide professional service to customers by addressing concerns, explaining system conditions and repairs, and representing the organization professionally at every jobsite.
Documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed documentation for each service visit, including photographs, testing results, equipment information, serial numbers, repairs performed, replacement equipment, system performance, and recommended corrective actions.
Manufacturer Support & RMA: Assist with manufacturer troubleshooting, technical support cases, warranty claims, and RMA processes for applicable solar equipment.
Safety & Compliance: Follow safety procedures and all applicable OSHA, electrical, fall-protection, and jobsite safety requirements.
Training & Development: Maintain and expand knowledge of solar, electrical, battery storage, monitoring, and related technologies through ongoing manufacturer training and professional development.
Communication: Work closely with Operations, Project Management, Service, and O&M teams to maintain schedules, communicate field conditions, and ensure project deadlines and customer expectations are met.
Autonomy & Accountability: Operate with a high degree of independence while traveling to and working at field locations. Execute assigned work with minimal direct supervision while demonstrating strong accountability, sound judgment, attention to detail, and commitment to quality and safety standards.
Education & Experience
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Vocational, electrical, renewable energy, or related technical training is preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience with solar installation, service, maintenance, troubleshooting, or repair preferred. Strong electrical experience is highly desirable.
Preferred Certifications
Enphase certifications – Installer, Technician, IQ Series, battery/storage, and related credentials
SolarEdge certifications – Fundamentals, Commercial, Home Hub/Energy Hub, No-Call RMA, and related credentials
NABCEP PV certification
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
NFPA 70E
CPR / First Aid
Tesla, SMA, Generac, SPAN, IronRidge, Unirac, Roof Tech, and other manufacturer certifications
Battery energy storage systems
NEC training and comprehension
Forklift, scissor lift, and boom lift certifications
Required Skills
Strong understanding of photovoltaic and electrical systems
Strong solar troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities
Ability to safely use electrical testing equipment and solar-specific tools
Ability to read system layouts, electrical diagrams, manufacturer documentation, and applicable plans
Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
Strong communication and customer-service skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a field service team
Strong attention to detail and field documentation
Ability to use mobile applications and digital field-service platforms
Ability to safely operate company vehicles and travel between customer locations
Physical Requirements
Candidates must be able to perform the physical requirements associated with field-based solar service work, including:
Working on rooftops and at heights
Safely climbing and working from ladders
Lifting and carrying solar equipment, tools, and materials
Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
Bending, kneeling, climbing, standing, and performing other physically demanding tasks
Properly utilizing required fall-protection and personal protective equipment
Driving Requirements
A valid driver's license and acceptable driving record are required. Solar Service Technicians regularly travel to customer and project locations and may be required to operate company vehicles.
Work Authorization
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Employment sponsorship is not available for this position.
