The Opportunity:

The Optical and Photonics Systems group of CACI is looking for candidates to help develop the next generation of optical technologies.  These include free-space optical communications terminals and modems and high-power optical sources across the optical spectrum.  Particularly, efforts will develop the next generation of capabilities, with previous successes having flown on the International Space Station as part of an optical communications relay demonstration and another having achieved the current largest data optical transmission range of >19 million miles, along with developing the Space Defense Agency’s standard terminal for laser communications.

This position is contingent upon contract award.

Responsibilities:

  • Design thermal control solutions including passive and active systems

  • Develop and validate thermal models using tools such as Thermal Desktop or similar

  • Simulate orbital thermal environments and perform worst-case temperature analyses of systems

  • Collaborate with other disciplines to define thermal requirements, margins, and interfaces

  • Work with mechanical and integration teams to define thermal control hardware layout and thermal interfaces

  • Prepare detailed documentation of thermal analysis, design decisions, and test results

  • Lead and support thermal testing campaigns, including thermal vacuum (TVAC) and thermal cycling tests

Qualifications:

Required:

  • US Citizenship required

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or similar field, and a minimum of 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience

  • Proficiency with thermal modeling tools (e.g., Thermal Desktop, SINDA/FLUINT, ESATAN, or similar)

  • Familiarity with space thermal environments and heat transfer principles (conduction, radiation, etc.)

  • Experience with the design and implementation of passive and active thermal control solutions (radiators, coatings, MLI, heaters, etc.)

  • Experience in building and analyzing thermal FEA models (e.g. Ansys Mechanical, SolidWorks simulation or similar)

  • Hands-on mindset, able to transition between analysis and real hardware

Desired:

  • A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or similar field

  • Experience with thermal testing campaigns, including thermal vacuum (TVAC) and thermal cycling tests

  • Experience in comparing tested data to critical model points and performing model correlation

This position is contingent on funding and may not be filled immediately. However, this position is representative of positions within CACI that are consistently available. Individuals who apply may also be considered for other positions at CACI.
