Structural Steel Field Surveyor

Location: Maryland or Virginia – Field-Based
Job Type: Direct Hire
Starting Pay: $30/hour, higher depending on experience

Position Overview

We are hiring a Field Surveyor to support structural steel construction throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. This position focuses on field layout, measurements, alignment, and survey work during steel installation. Regular travel to active construction sites is required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field measurements and collect survey information for structural steel projects.
  • Establish and verify building control lines, column locations, and anchor rod positions.
  • Check elevations, embed placement, and structural alignment.
  • Prepare and maintain as-built drawings based on field conditions.
  • Provide layout and alignment support during structural steel erection.
  • Work with steel erection crews and other trades to maintain proper plumbness, positioning, and structural accuracy.
  • Assist with the installation of structural and miscellaneous metals, including stairs, shafts, and related components.
  • Operate surveying equipment such as total stations and similar instruments.
  • Use Trimble, Bluebeam, CAD, and Microsoft Office for field and project-related work.
  • Follow established safety procedures while working on active construction sites.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in field surveying or structural steel erection.
  • Experience with surveying slopes, grades, and layout for structural and miscellaneous metals.
  • Proficiency with total stations or comparable surveying equipment.
  • Working knowledge of AISC standards related to building alignment and orientation.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
  • Able to communicate effectively and work with field crews, contractors, and other trades.
  • Willing and able to travel regularly to job sites throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
  • Comfortable working at heights, including aerial lifts and elevated steel floors.

Additional Details

  • Company vehicle and gas card provided for work-related travel.
  • Primarily field-based position with occasional time at office/shop locations for training and meetings.
  • Training and ongoing support provided.
