The student worker drone team member will conduct a variety of duties to support safe, FAA-compliant Public Safety Department drone operations. Team members will begin their journey performing basic visual observer functions while working through the FAA Remote Pilot certification process. Successful members will continue their training in phases to eventually become solo certified drone as first responder (DFR) remote pilots. This position is training intensive and will require a 20-hour/week commitment to successfully obtain FAA Remote Pilot Certification and continue through the various phases of skills-based instruction. Preferred candidate will be able to work additional hours during summer break.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with training exercises for full-time pilots
- Perform visual observer duties
- Conduct pre-flight and post-flight equipment checks
- Perform basic maintenance, updates, and calibration of drone systems
- Upload and transfer media captured by drone equipment
- Operate drones safely and legally under FAA Part 107 guidelines
- Plan and execute drone flight missions
- Analyze flight paths, weather, and airspace to ensure mission safety and FAA compliance
Skills and Qualifications:
- Must be able to successfully obtain FAA Remote Pilot certification within an allotted amount of exam prep time and training
- Demonstrate proficient and safe drone operation
- Strong technical troubleshooting skills
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and situational awareness
- Attention to detail and adherence to safety procedures
- Clear communication with internal and external teams and partners
- Problem-solving and critical thinking
Experience/Education:
- Enrolled at GCU as a full-time student in a Bachelor's program or Master's program
- Retain a 2.0 GPA as a Bachelor level student or a 3.0 GPA as a Master level student
- Maintain good financial and academic (SAP) standing with the university
