POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision directs the work of the survey crew engaged in determining the precise location and measurements of point, elevations, lines, areas and contours; performs related work as required. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Supervises field survey crew in obtaining alignment, topographic, cross-sectional, horizontal and vertical information necessary for engineering design and construction of roadway, utility and bridge projects
  •  Sets up and operates all survey instruments and equipment as needed
  •  Identifies and establishes land boundaries and legal descriptions of land for conveyance and recording purposes or to determine encroachments in the public right-of-way
  •  Locates and identifies survey monuments
  • Determines proper layout procedures for construction and supervises crew in performance of work
  • Produces survey base maps for engineering projects from topographic and planimetric and photogrammetric survey data
  • Coordinates the research and collection of all legal documents to ascertain proper ownership of parcels
  • Prepares and/or reviews warranty deeds, legals descriptions, easement descriptions and work agreements
  • Signs and certifies topographic maps, survey plats, and other documents as a registered surveyor
  •  Completes and researches state, county and city public records (maps, property deeds, surveys, highway plans, city plans, subdivision plats) and/or utility companies, private engineering firms and surveying firms
  •  May appear in court as an expert witness
  • Prepares final topographic survey and other survey data as required in engineering design software for use by engineering design or construction staff

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Surveying principles, practices and terminology.
  • Instruments and equipment used in survey work.
  • Construction methods.
  • Microsoft Office products. 
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D

Skill in:

  • Oral and written communications. 
  • Interpreting construction plans.
  • Researching boundary and property ownership determination.
  • Evaluating new technology and purchase of new equipment.
  • Supervising subordinate personnel.

Ability to:

  • Manage and prioritize multiple projects and assignments simultaneously
  • Work with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, superiors, vendor representatives and clients.


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND CERTIFICATIONS

Level 1 ($40.68)
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Surveying or Civil Engineering with at least 24 quarter hours or equivalent semester or trimester hours of approved surveying courses in surveying directly and mapping arts and sciences.
Must be a licensed Professional Surveyor in the state of Ohio or be a licensed Professional Surveyor in another state at the time of application.  Individuals without the State of Ohio Professional Surveyor license must obtain a State Ohio Professional Surveyor’s license within one (1) year of hire date.   
Additional or Special Requirements
Must possess a valid driver's license.
 
Level 2 ($42.72)
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Surveying or Civil Engineering with at least 24 quarter hours or equivalent semester or trimester hours of approved surveying courses in surveying directly and mapping arts and sciences and four (4) years of surveying experience with a Professional Surveyor License. 
Must be a licensed Professional Surveyor in the state of Ohio or be a licensed Professional Surveyor in another state at the time of application.  Individuals without the State of Ohio Professional Surveyor license must a State of Ohio Professional Surveyor’s license within one (1) year of hire date.  
Additional or Special Requirements
Must possess a valid driver's license.
 
Level 3 ($45.84)
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Surveying or Civil Engineering with at least 24 quarter hours or equivalent semester or trimester hours of approved surveying courses in surveying directly and mapping arts and sciences and eight (8) years of surveying experience with a Professional Surveyor License. 
Must be a licensed Professional Surveyor in the state of Ohio or be a licensed Professional Surveyor in another state at the time of application.  Individuals without the State of Ohio Professional Surveyor license must obtain a State of Ohio Professional Surveyor’s license within one (1) year of hire date.
Additional or Special Requirements  
Must possess a valid driver's license.
 
Level 4 ($48.42)
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Surveying or Civil Engineering with at least 24 quarter hours or equivalent semester or trimester hours of approved surveying courses in surveying directly and mapping arts and sciences and twelve (12) years of surveying experience with a Professional Surveyor License. 
Must be a licensed Professional Surveyor in the state of Ohio or be a licensed Professional Surveyor in another state at the time of application.  Individuals without the State of Ohio Professional Surveyor license must obtain a State of Ohio Professional Surveyor’s license within one (1) year of hire date.  
Additional or Special Requirements
Must possess a valid driver's license.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

In this position, the employee will occasionally stand. This employee will frequently walk, sit, stand, lift, push, pull, drag and/or carry up to 15 pounds. The employee will constantly walk-in all-weather conditions. Occasional stooping and crouching may occur with this position.  Speaking and listening are constant essential functions of this position.
