Job Title: Maintenance Technician, Solar Monitoring System (Part-Time, Training Provided)
Primary Location: Montgomery County, NY
Position Type: W2 Contract, Part-Time, 2 to 4 hours per week, 1-to-2-year Contract

Overview
TalentFish is casting a line for a Solar Field Services Inspector. This is a part-time contract role in Montgomery County, NY. This position exists to maintain a solar monitoring system (SMS) installed on behalf of our client, ensuring consistent and accurate collection of solar irradiance data along with other meteorological and weather-related parameters. The station occupies 650 square feet on flat, cleared ground and consists of one primary solar panel and 12V battery bank, two 7-foot tripods, and scientific measurement equipment, surrounded by a locked chain link fence. The station requires weekly maintenance on the same day each week during daylight hours for a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 2 years. Each maintenance visit should take 60 to 90 minutes, and the weekly Excel logbook, photos, and supporting documentation should take 45 to 90 minutes.

The entire process is estimated at 2 to 4 hours each week, including travel time to and from the site. No solar experience is required. Training will be provided remotely via phone and video, with potential onsite training when possible.

What You Bring to the Role. (Ideal Experience)

  • Ability to take instruction remotely throughout the length of the contract term
  • Your own transportation to and from the remote site; the station is located on undeveloped land accessed via unpaved roads, so a 4WD or AWD vehicle is required
  • Willing and able to walk to and from the site, typically no more than 1/4 mile in one direction
  • Able to climb and work comfortably from a 6 or 8 foot ladder (provided)
  • Able to maintain equipment using levels, screwdrivers, and other hand tools (provided)
  • Demonstrated computer literacy with reliable internet, including the ability to upload before and after photos with proper naming conventions to a SharePoint website
  • A smartphone to take site photos and to communicate with the project team while onsite in the event of an emergency; a laptop or desktop computer is recommended for weekly uploads
  • Your own equipment and tools to maintain grass heights and snow levels within the fenced area

What You'll Do. (Skills Used in this Position)

  • Uphold the highest level of communication as the first point of contact for equipment in the field
  • Ensure all equipment is level and clean on a weekly basis
  • Ensure there is no debris obstructing the system, including maintaining grass heights and snow levels within the fenced area; brush and shrubs are cleared during installation by the installation subcontractor
  • Confirm the system is secure and has not been tampered with
  • Use a ladder to access meteorological instruments mounted approximately 7 to 8 feet high on the tripods, solely to clean and level sensors with a screwdriver and microfiber cloth and to capture photographs
  • Wipe clean the surface of the single solar panel with water and a microfiber cloth
  • Complete and upload a weekly Excel logbook along with photos and other documentation to support each visit
  • Provide troubleshooting with remote engineering support and, when requested, assistance with low to medium complexity issues; equipment repairs are performed only by the installation subcontractor or the equipment manufacturer
  • Occasionally assist with replacing or troubleshooting equipment, with a Senior Engineer walking you through the process, supporting you while onsite, and reviewing data after the equipment repair

This role does not require access to rooftop solar, interaction with the battery bank, or lockout/tagout procedures. A standard solar monitoring system maintenance kit and cellular trail camera may be provided.
